Look out Turkey, because we’re comin’ for you!
It’s definitely not a good time of year to be a certain type of flightless bird, but IS if you are a certain type of flightless mammal; one that walks on 2 legs and has a penchant for stuffing smothered in gravy. There’s no containing our abundant glee…we Love ‘Turkey Day’ !
With a fork in one hand and a goblet of crushed grapes in the other, we get to test the limits of guilt free gluttony and enjoy one last reprieve before the ensuing Holiday madness.
It’s an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the things that really matter – good health, taste buds, a meal, warmth, shelter, a friend, a loud mouth uncle, a pain in the ass brother in law, a job that you can take a few days off from and football. We may acknowledge these things in our minds from time to time but by coming together to do so gives them deeper meaning along with a heightened regard for each blessing.
What most everybody who considers Thanksgiving to be their favorite Holiday agrees on is that there is no pretension. My costume is not going to be better than yours because there’s no costume contest. My gift list is rather short, maybe a pie or some flowers…because affection is the only thing needed to give. No boxes of candy, no yielding to the wishes of a birthday brat, no plastic eggs stuffed with loose change or freakishly gigantic bunny. Certainly no eight crazy nights or Temple or Church or Mosque. What’s also nice is that you can wish anybody a “Happy Thanksgiving” and not have to worry that by doing so you might offend them. You can put it in an email and not be in violation of some obscure company policy that might get you canned. This all creates a rare free flow of well wishes and a soft, cordial atmosphere; relief from a cockamamie and often callous world. It doesn’t matter who you are, Thanksgiving is inclusive to all! Every race, creed, man, woman, child and family pet is welcome. E-V-E-R-Y ONE.
There are 3 words we should all use as often as possible: Please, Sorry and Thanks. For right now though, let’s focus on the Thanks…
