Turns out that although very good for marketers, TV might be bad for your ticker. A recent study by the Medical Research Council concluded that 11% of cases of coronary heart disease could be prevented if people watched less than an hour of TV each day. Yikes! How likely is it we’ll get those couch potatoes to cut FOUR hours and 47 minutes out of their boob-tube diet (according to the GfK TVB Media Comparisons Study 2022, Daily time spent with TV is 5 hrs : 47 minutes)? About as likely as we are to get valid, reliable and effective cross device Measurement anytime soon from the other MRC (Media Ratings Council)!

ba-dum-bum-CHING !!!

Look, we all know just how bad Social Media is for your soul; the litany of negative effects which I’ve listed in Super Awesome. And we all know marketing itself could be a harmful force as I so succinctly pointed out in Social Media May be Hazardous to your Health stating for example that “the Marlboro Man was a lie that airbrushed cancer with coolness”.

But, it turns out that sitting on your keister for 1/3 of your waking hours might not be too good either. This is of course is not a causal but a correlational effect; it is not as if the electromagnetic radiation emitted from the TV screen is responsible for clogging ones arteries but rather, those who lead sedentary lifestyles are much less likely to be Sweatin’ to the Oldies.

Interestingly the study found “leisure time spent using a computer did not appear to influence disease risk”, but this was a study about physical, not mental health…

Because let’s face it, when it comes to the unhealthiness of Social Media AND TV, it’s either depression or coronary heart disease….both serious as a heart attack.
